1. Introduction
This Project is designed to mitigate the
negative economic impacts of poor
maternal health, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis
(TB) and other diseases by strengthening
the country’s health care system. The
project can be categorized by three
major components namely; Infrastructure
Development, Health Systems
strengthening and health care waste
management.
2. Infrastructure Development
Health Centers
-
The project involves renovation
and rehabilitation of about 150
health centers which belong to
the Government of Lesotho (GoL),
Christian Health Association of
Lesotho (CHAL) and Lesotho Red
Cross Society (LRCS),

Provision of utilities to the
health centers (power,
communication, water),
-
Medical waste disposal
facilities,
-
Renovation of related staff
housing,
-
Medical equipment, instruments
and clinical furniture.
Anti Retroviral Therapy
Infrastructure (ART) This activity involves the following
activities:

Expansion of out patient
departments for 14 hospitals to
accommodate ART services,
-
Provision of medical equipment
and instruments, office
equipment and clinical
furniture.
Blood Transfusion Services

Construction of Blood Bank
facility and provision of
equipment,

Refrigeration and other
equipment and furniture for 2
regional blood collection units,

Provision of cold chain vehicles
for the transportation of blood,

Computers for quality assurance
program
National Referral Laboratory

Construction of the laboratory

Provision of equipment and
furniture for the new lab

National Health Training College

3. Health Systems Strengthening (HSS)
This activity focuses on the
selected three (3) priority areas for
strengthening of health care service
delivery, and these are: health care
service decentralization, health human
resources strengthening and health
management information system (HIMS).

This activity involves enhancing
capacity of health staff in
areas such as decentralization
management, health services
quality, health facility
maintenance, management of
health centers, waste management
and continuing education for
staff.
4. Medical Waste Management
The objective of this component is
to develop the policy, regulations, and
guidelines, operating procedures for
medical waste management and infection
control; train health care workers and
sensitize communities on health care
waste management and infection control
The amount of money allocated for this
project is US $122 million and will be
utilized for a period of 5 years. |
